Lady With a Lamp

Cast of Characters

FLORENCE Nightingale (mid-30’s) — the Lady with the Lamp, a nurse of upper-class origin, a slender pale brunette, inconspicuously beautiful, unsentimental, somewhat abrasive, educated above other women, prefers the company of powerful men.

GRANT, Thomas (late 40’s) — a weary doctor with a sinister past, Florence’s friend and love interest, a broken-down physical and intellectual giant.

BENNETT, Timothy (early 20’s) — a surgeon under Dr. Grant’s command, insubordinate, maniacal, with sadistic inclinations; a clean-cut, buttoned-up butcher.

REBECCA Prior (late teens — early 20’s) — a young nurse, beautiful but inarticulate and skittish, prone to contributing to conflicts, becomes the object of Bennett’s lust.

MARTIN, James (early to mid-20’s) — a wounded soldier with a criminal past; hates Bennett, whom he blames for the loss of his hand; develops a filial attachment to Florence and a chivalrous infatuation with Rebecca.

CARDIGAN (50’s) — an incompetent British general, arrogant in public, cowardly in private, tries to put the blame for a botched campaign on Lucan.

LUCAN (50’s) — Cardigan’s direct commander and brother-in-law, condescending, invincible in his own eyes, scandalous and insensitive.
