Bewildering Stories introduces and welcomes...
K. J. Watson
K. J. lives in Scotland with his wife and two huge dogs. In addition to publishing on line, his fiction has been broadcast on radio and has appeared in magazines, anthologies and comics.
“I’m Damned” does not have a first-person narrator, but readers will hear the thoughts of the crooked protagonist, Brydale. The story invites readers to speculate about Brydale, for instance: why has she become a shoplifter by profession?
And who is the store manager, who operates what seems to be a relatively small shop? We get a hint — and Brydale really should, as well — that the manager is a fantastical personage, especially when she magically materializes behind Brydale, who is busy trying to pocket items. It isn’t a crime to accept a gift from the store manager, but Brydale has stolen from the shop before. And, in this case, crime not only doesn’t pay, it gets repaid with a vengeance.
