Bewildering Stories introduces and welcomes...
Sam Kaplan
Sam lives with his wife in her native Singapore, “a tropical isle with rapid transit.” Sam has graduate degrees in Economics and Russian Studies from the University of Michigan. He has taught conversational English in France and Italy. He says that working on economic projections at the University of Virginia has prepared him for his “current project of writing fiction.” Readers will surely take it as a word to the wise.
“Promises and Portals” is a tribute to the scenery of the author’s home in Singapore. It’s enlivened by the introduction of a time portal, which the narrator steps on whenever he goes for a walk. Neither he nor his wife know when he’ll come home; he may return on time or years later. The story raises a question for the readers: What would you do if your neighbourhood sidewalks played such tricks on you?
