Bewildering Stories introduces and welcomes...
Joel McKay
After careers as a journalist and public relations executive, Joel manages an organization for economic development in northern British Columbia. At night, he writes award-winning fiction.
“The Ministry of Labour Transition” will impress readers with its socio-political satire. No one will believe that any government would institute a “rewilding” program would uproot, dispossess and deport the entire northern and western population of Canada — with the expectable exception of belching-smokestack Alberta — to a “corridor” ranging from the Detroit River to the southern shores of Quebec.
And that seems to be the point: if such a literally outlandish program existed, it would come to resemble the automobile accident that Ray, the protagonist, caused. As a consequence, Ray reluctantly enforces the edicts of the Ministry of Labour Transition and, at home, he uses holograms to wish away the past in the form of the deaths of his wife and child, who were killed in the accident.
