“The Crane and the Spear” is a very timely story in that its reliance on history shows that tall tales and “conspiracy theories” are endemic to humanity and not merely another weird social illness of modern times. People don’t go crazy by believing crazy things; they believe those things because they’re already crazy.

Before the migration of birds was discovered, what personalities made up what kinds of stories to explain the disappearance of birds in winter? And how were the scientific theory and its proponent treated?
