“First Day Back” will attract the attention of readers who are fans of “android” stories. It follows the tradition well-established by Star Trek with the characters of Data (in “The Next Generation”) and the Doctor (in Voyager).
In “First Day Back,” the narrator, a bereaved widow, works at factory that produces androids. As a kind of surprise present on her return to work, she is offered an android who closely resembles her late husband but who needs “monitoring,” i.e. training. Readers will certainly be amused by the concept and may have some questions.
