Bewildering Stories welcomes...
Gregory Thompson
Gregory has a Master’s degree in secondary education from James Madison University. He is presently an English teacher in Seoul, South Korea.
“Release: A Miner’s Sentence Ends” is a model of the horror story. It depicts the crushing loneliness of a convict, Fadden, who has been condemned to serve 50 years at hard labor in a virtual prison.
But is the sentence also virtual? What becomes of Fadden’s wife and daughter, whom he is allowed to talk to but not to see? When Fadden learns that his real body is dead, he is faced with an even crueler fate: death or perpetual imprisonment.
Readers may well wonder whether Fadden’s fate fits his crime. What had he done other than corrupt a tyrannical system that was already corrupt?
