Bewildering Stories welcomes...
Hayley Reese Chow
Hayley works days as an engineer, a U.S. Air Force reservist, and a mother of two young boys. She says she’s spent a long time in school to “learn about numbers” but has a secret passion for words, which she indulges in the stillness of the night. And as we shall see, her words make sense.
“Wild Demand” is set in a college town where the college specializes in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). As is well known, women are late-comers to those professions, through no fault of their own.The story depicts what happens in professions and societies where gender imbalance gets out of hand: tensions arise. Systematize it, as with polygamy, and civil wars become endemic, and they can spread. The story concludes with a warning against bioengineered sex selection: what would dark-age tribal wars look like on a national and continental scale in today’s world? A story from our early years, A. R. Yngve’s “The Sins of Our Fathers,” finds an echo.
