Bewildering Stories welcomes...
Daniel C. Smith
Daniel has published extensively stories, articles, review and poems in the genres of science fiction and horror, to favorable reception.
“Space Weapons” has the virtue of citing numerous treaties, agreements and commissions dedicated to the peaceful exploration of space. All readers will surely agree: keep guns and bombs out of it.
However, knowing human beings as we do and as the cussed lot they often are, one has to wonder whether space can have the same demilitarized, “no-claim” status as, say, Antarctica. Isn’t it more likely that space will have something like the laws of the seas on Earth?
Governments are not the only ones involved in space exploration. As private enterprise increasingly ventures into space, how might piracy be handled? And space piracy need not be so mundane as robbing or hijacking passing spaceships: what could be the response to, say, nuclear extortion or, in a more distant future, to attacks on colonies on the Moon or Mars?
In that light, what could any U.S. president do? Personal motives aside, isn’t the call for a “Space Force,” whatever that may be, a move forced by events and conditions both current and foreseeable?
