Gennady Sherman

Gennady was born and raised in St. Petersburg, Russia. He came to the U.S. in 1990 and now lives in Columbia, Maryland. His education has been in Engineering, but he now works in Information Technology. In his leisure time, he composes music and poetry.

“Lucky Dog” is a narrative poem that will surely tug at the readers’ heartstrings and bring tears to their eyes. What can a dog best offer but loyalty and friendly companionship? How wrong it is that she would be spurned and abandoned.

Some readers will cry, “Anthropomorphism!” Quite so, but that is the basis of all the classic fables, from Aesop to La Fontaine: animals — and even plants — think like human beings but act like themselves.

The poem lacks the concluding moral typical of the fable, but it hardly needs one. Rush, now, to your local animal shelter and adopt a friendly dog. You may want to think twice, though, about the surly, bitey ones, unless you’re adept at dog training. And does not the same go for human beings?
