Austine Osas

Austine says he can be found in Lagos and Abuja, Nigeria, where he photo-documents the lives of everyday people. Austine is also very active in the world of art and artists and has published in literary journals in Africa and elsewhere.

Austine says in a recent e-mail that he’s come down with malaria, a dread disease common in equatorial Africa. It also used to be found in the southern U.S., such as near the Great Dismal Swamp. Been there; had that. We’re worried, Austine, and hope you have the appropriate medical treatment.

Is “On That Last Gettin’-Up Mornin’” flash fiction or a prose poem? It’s flash fiction in structure, but the content resembles a lyrical essay. Since genre classification tends to influence readers’ perception, we’ve decided to call it a prose poem. Perhaps the classification will serve as more open an invitation to explore the work’s meaning.
