Bewildering Stories welcomes...
Martin Grise
Martin says he’s an academic “surfeited with heavy monographs” and wants to return to “swashbuckling” stories inspired by writers such as David Drake and Fritz Leiber.
“Operation Intoxicar” exploits a truly Bewildering concept. Augusto is a dour soldier who has found love late in life. But she has been kidnapped along with other ladies, and he must rescue them. The problem is that the criminals have hidden their hostages in an almost impenetrable maze.
Fortunately, Augusto experiences dream sequences that parallel — or parody, if you will — the “reset” function of traditional computer or video games. The plot cleverly sidesteps our “Dream Stories” guideline by having Augusto waken with the solution to the puzzle and, as readers expect from the beginning, emerge ready for action.
