“The Veggie Uprising” will surely bring a broad smile to readers as they contemplate the narrator’s dilemma: if eating meat is cruel to animals, what can we do if Dr. Doolittle could talk to plants as well as animals? What if plants are trying to talk to us? What nourishment can we have if sentimentality leaves us with only cold water?
But “Veggie Uprising” is no “kitchen sink” comedy. It obliges the readers to consider unreconciled values: we might like hamburgers but would not want to be butchers. And where does sentiment end?
Your editor forewarned Kelly that the story would be paired with a Classic Reissue that starts with the same premise: Cyrano de Bergerac’s “Go to the Cabbage, and Be Wise.” But Kelly’s story is quite modern, while Cyrano speaks to us from a distance of almost four hundred years and with quite a different purpose.
