“The Organic Act of 2916” will amuse Star Trek fans, even though the story is not fan fiction and does not mention the TV series. The “alien” commander is named “Jim,” and the story gives an unusual twist to the conundrum of the “Prime Directive,” namely the rule that Star Fleet must not inferfere in the cultures of any races they discover. As all Trekkies know, the Prime Directive is observed most often in the breach because, as Mr. Spock would say — and one of the characters does say — it is “illogical.”
