Love Letters Never Sent

by Stephen Ellams

Dear Heather,
First impressions?
Mine are swallow tail-feathered
Sheer lips
I long to kiss
Voluptuous
Daydream
Fluttering around me
Your deep Prussian-blue eyes
Brief flirtatious glances
We are already dancing

* * *

Dear Heather,
Fair weather
As you cross the English Channel
With head-spun love for me
And butterflies in your stomach
Discreet white-letter hairstreaks
Wings struck on the off-beat
Lateral basking in ancient memory
Imagined or real

* * *

Dear Heather,
Pagan goddess,
Let's strip ourselves naked
In the hushed wooded wilds
Of fertile imagination
There I shall lay you down on your name
Beside the fires of Beltane
And draw you tightly to my chest
Just as the moment comes

* * *

Dear Heather,
Please consider
The distance between us
As the Yule log slowly burns
Down to hypnotic embers
Shall it bring old temptations?
Cause our space-time to curve?
And place us in stasis
Until Saturn's return

* * *

Dear Heather,
Tuck our secret safely under your pillow
And let it caress your ear
With nine-fold winter longing
For each muse you gave birth to
All the ways that I'll miss you
My bittersweet poetic fusion
of Erato and Melpomene

* * *

Dear Heather,
Unfettered
Mother of duel creation
Wading through poppy fields
Hugging trees like they're children
Sensing how nature breathes
Shedding tears for the fallen
Harvesting gifts for me
On the last day of Autumn

* * *

Dear Heather,
I shall endeavour to rise from the ashes
Of thrice-cremated love
Fear of no redemption
A millstone I still carry
Back and forth across the Pennines
The weight of which is only lifted
When I run my fingers through your hair

* * *

Dear Heather,
No matter if our twinned souls should sever
And the trident in my heart
Remains lodged there forever
In eight letters I now give you
Poetic truth with no postscripts
A sub-atomic insight into
How your starlight energises me
