“What Good Is Arithmetic?” may strike some readers as being, on the surface, a sentimental story about a young schoolboy who meets a teacher of his who is in dire straits. But that’s only where the story starts. It has profound implications, among which is hope in the midst of horror.
Astute readers will also see a model of a good teacher in action. “Say what?” readers may ask. “Madame Bernard gives André the wrong answers to the arithmetic problems!” Yes, she does. And now, this teacher asks, why does she do that?
