Bewildering Stories welcomes...
Martin Westlake
Martin might have been a senior civil servant or an academic. As it is, he’s a “budding writer with some poetry and short fiction published” and a novel in progress.
“Just Protein” falls into what promises to be a rapidly growing — pardon the pun — subgenre: “frankenfood” stories. Peter Spencer-Lord is a latter-day Victor Frankenstein. He has perfected — or so he thinks — an industrial process whereby flies are turned into protein. His motivation is noble: to feed a hungry world inexpensively. The only problem is that his flies have a propensity to go on murderous rampages. The authorities are unaccountably unconcerned, but one can imagine munificently greased palms in the right places.
Peter’s family and friend Yves are carefully drawn characters. Readers can only anticipate their fate. Might Peter be around to see the results of his work? It would be a pity if he weren’t.
