Alicia Bair

Alicia has been writing since age 13. She’s found that her four-year tour of duty in the U.S. Army has given her experience that has helped her improve her poetry and fiction. She also enjoys painting and drawing.

“Mortal Contention” has something of an epic flavor. It’s written in quatrains and rhymed couplets that give it a kind of march-step rhythm. The content is medieval fantasy: a knight rescues a princess from a kind of dragon, but at the conclusion, the damsel in distress is the one we see in action.

The imagery denotes violent combat, and word choices will sometimes challenge readers to decipher unexpected ambiguities. In the end readers may wonder whether the poem might be an allegory for a real-life story.
