Bewildering Stories welcomes...
Rudy Ravindra
Rudy is a native of India but moved to the USA some thirty years ago. He lives with his family in North Carolina. He began writing in the past ten years and has had very respectable success in publishing short fiction.
“An Ambitious Girl” is a story that implies far more than it states. On one hand it is a relatively simple tragi-comedy — “bittersweet,” as one of our Review Editors terms it — about Stella and Satish and their “love that cannot be.”
On the other hand, it is a story that takes place in cultural borderlands. It has to explain carefully to non-Indian readers things that Indians will consider obvious. At the same time it has to make traditionalists think the unthinkable.
Stella’s love and good will are reciprocated by Satish and his family. And yet she is by her very name a foreigner in her own country. The story of Stella and Satish ends on a sad note, and that is where the story of India begins.
