Brevin Anderson

Brevin is finishing up his junior year in high school in Uganda but will be returning to the States for his senior year. He enjoys basketball, philosophy and anything involving strategy. He published stories in a journal and an anthology before coming to Bewildering Stories.

“Island Long” does some remarkable scene-setting in a post-apocalyptic world. The ending is somewhat reminiscent of the film made of Pierre Boule’s Planet of the Apes.

The main character, Arrem, is coming of age as a hunter-gatherer in a world reduced to two seasons: a nuclear winter and a short summer. His curiosity about “Grandfather’s” ability to read books and his contemplation of the fallen “god” statue give some hope for the future.

One might wonder, though, why Arrem and his kinfolk use wooden spears to hunt elk. They live in the ruins of an pre-apocalypse city, and you’d think they’d find plenty of metal.
