Bewildering Stories welcomes...
Suzanna Stanbury
Suzanna is a native of Bristol, England, where she resides. She has published extensively: five children’s books, eighty short stories, and at least one stage play. She’s also the administrator of the Bristol Fiction Wrriters Group and writes a weekly column for Northcliffe Media.
“On Pitch Lane” is a powerful account of a person who feigns indifference in relationships and yet, in the end, is moved to murder by jealous rage.
Is “On Pitch Lane” an allegory of sex? The ending certainly suggests such a reading. And yet beware of one of Bewildering Stories’ unofficial mottoes: “Readers take everything literally unless they know to do otherwise.” The account can also be read as a motivation of a certain type of criminal behaviour.
The Challenge asks whether the narrator is male or female. If the name “Angelica” is the narrator’s, then the answer is probably female, but not necessarily.
The Challenge also asks whether the account might be a chapter in a larger story. If so, it might be one in which Jack — or Joan — the Ripper has a kind of Dorian Gray moment.
