Maia lives in Maryland. She has finished one novel and has another on the way.

The title “Too Pale for a Lifeguard” reflects Paine’s realization that Ray is too dangerous for her. But why does she feel that way? The fantasy gradually unfolds subtle hints to Paine’s disturbed past and suggests why she might find Ray attractive and yet, in the end, be unable to accept him. In the end, Paine’s story remains a mystery, and Paine herself remains alone with a sea of anger.
