I’m Alive
by Arnold Hollander
darkness
the night narrows me
as droplets, tiny tears, gently fall
as light from the squad car
stabs and fixes me
like a butterfly to a card
sounds of shoes squishing
through the damp grass
sounds of voices
“Found him. Take good shots.”
more squishing shoes
as light flashes surround me
movement, now being placed
into a fabric body bag
I want to shout
“I’m alive”
the zipper slides up
darkness
