“That Great Big Ladder in the Sky” purports to be a dark vision of the afterlife, where a medieval French peasant performs a mind-numbing routine in Purgatory. Eventually he must answer an implied question: if this is the way to Heaven, can Hell be any worse?
Of course, the story is not about the afterlife at all: it’s about the futility of avoiding moral choices, about committing atrocities by “just following orders.”
