Bewildering Stories welcomes...
Terry W. Ervin II
Terry teaches English and writes science fiction and fantasy. He’s published widely.
“Fictional History” is more provocative than it might appear at first glance. A superficial reading will lead readers to assume that Professor Hollins is giving his student Anthony a rather painfully obvious lesson in manuscript editing, a lesson that Prof. Hollins’ daughter Debbie — no star student, herself — can hardly miss.
But the center of the story is neither the manuscript nor Anthony: it’s Professor Hollins’ failure to apply his own method to his own assumptions. He leaves a hole in his logic that the reader is impicitly invited to fill, and the Challenge obligingly drives a truck through it.
