H. E. Sappenfield

Heather (H. E.) Sappenfield is a professional skier and, she says, an avid cyclist. “Avid” is hardly the word for it: she was a member of a team that won the Race Across America.

Heather has published mostly, it would seem, non-fiction articles in many national magazines. Her story “Tryst” won the prize for short stories in the Paul Gillette Memorial Writing Contest in 2006.

It’s easy to see why “Tryst” would be a prize-winner. The story can be read in more than one way at a time. As one of our Review Editors notes: “It can be interpreted as a horror, the bike actually having a mind of its own and a masculine power. Or it can be interpreted from a Freudian point of view, explaining Carol’s behavior as a solution to surpressed sexuality and fear of human contact. Her behavior can also be experienced as fetishism.”
