Bewildering Stories welcomes...
Graeme Reynolds
Graeme is a software engineer who lives in southwestern England and writes horror fiction.
“Leader of the Pack” is a werewolf story with a novel twist: it turns the genre upside down by looking at the werewolf not from the viewpoint of human beings but from that of wolves. Some readers will find the ending discordant, but it can also be read as a kind of double irony on the genre. And it’s difficult to imagine a non-anthropomorphic ending that would not fall flat.
In a way, “Leader of the Pack” resembles Rick Combs’ The Leader, which we published about six years ago, back in issue 59. Rick Combs’ irony is based on the reader’s expectation that the main character will be a human being. Graeme’s irony is based on the reader’s expectation that the main character will be a wolf.
