Sarah Trachtenberg

Sarah lives in Brookline, Massachusetts and works as a freelance writer. She has an M.A. in Psychology. She writes about psychology, sex, and religion. As a sideline Sarag performs stand-up comedy with Stephen Colbert as her model. A current projects are a young adult novel and a book about the personal stories of atheists.

“Manufacturing Celebrity,” which begins in this issue, introduces a professor who is about as far from fame as can be. But since he is a professor of psychology and wants to run an experiment on the process of generating public notoriety, who knows: maybe even he can earn a few seconds of fame on Oprah — or, come to think of it, even the Colbert Repor’; but he doesn’t seem to be quick-witted enough for that.

The result is a satire, but of what? As a professor, I have to say that it’s a satire not of the latter-day cult of celebrity but of academia. The story itself parodies academic writing in a dry, tongue-in-cheek sort of way.
