“Darwin’s God” is a story quite in tune with the Zeitgeist. If we consider the world as a physical system rather than as a manifestation of a transcendental reality, what does that do to a belief or hope that existence has a meaning?

Darwin respected religious faith but had no time for it, himself. Trying to go beyond Darwin, philosophers such as Teilhard de Chardin — a collateral relative of Voltaire, ironically enough — and Frank Tipler seem to have given modern Western mysticism an oddly scientific flavor...
