Tom Underhill

Tom lives with his family in Chicago. He likes to write what he calls “twisted fiction” and “weird, stubborn surrealism.” He’d like to write a historical fantasy, to go with his academic training. He’s published fiction in various magazines and e-zines.

“Branded Faith” introduces a man who learns at a young age that his magical power makes him the prophet that a dwindling cult has been waiting for. His power forces upon him the dual role of healer and killer, a role he finds unacceptable. But life itself is poised on the cusp of Yin and Yang; the branded man embodies that universal dichotomy with an uncommonly immediate finality.

The story employs an unusual contrastive device: it recounts recurrent flashbacks in the present tense and the main story in the narrative past.
