Poems to Louise H.
Third Poem
by Bill Bowler
Come on to me heavy at a party once,
smile sweetly, tease me,
laugh and gaze into my eyes discreetly,
kiss me, and arrange to meet me
Monday close to one for lunch...
It’s nothing much at all,
but it’s too late,
too soon we meet our latest fates,
for someone else’s girlfriend I am doomed to fall
and fall I do, so when I call
and ask you hesitantly whether
you would like to go out Wednesday,
better that you tell me gently,
“S. and I are back together.”
I expect it. It’s okay. I almost could foresee,
and though Experience does often urge me to be free,
I refuse the offer to be saved,
and stay Love’s slave.
