My Day
by Katherine L. Michaels
Feelings of anger, envy, and hate
Fill me from the inside.
I keep them close, so no one can see.
(Every year I have to hide.)
This day should be mine, and mine alone;
Today is too special to share.
But share I must with one who’s blind.
(Or maybe she just doesn’t care.)
She wakes and laughs, dancing around our room
Wondering what we’ll receive.
She doesn’t notice that I don’t share her joy.
(I wish she’d just hurry and leave!)
If only she’d waited just two minutes more,
We’d not have to share this date.
But no, she hurried to follow me out.
(You know how she hates to be late.)
We get to the table and open our gifts.
Of course they are the same.
I want something different, something just for me!
(She even got the prettier name.)
Finally the day’s over, we’re sent off to bed.
She just wants to lie there and talk.
I turn and ignore her, just to cause pain.
(I picture stuffing her mouth full of chalk!!!)
Yesterday’s finished, I’m glad it is done.
The day took forever to end.
I stretch and roll over and smile at my twin,
(Knowing she’ll always be my best friend.)
