“A Thousand Lives of Flies” is a parody of the doctrine of reincarnation, but it is far less humor than straight-ahead realism. It poses some interesting questions, such as: how do we know — rather than assume — that animals are not self-aware? How can we think about animals without anthropomorphizing them? Why does anyone deserve to be incarnated as a fly? Or as a human being, for that matter...
