Bewildering Stories

Paule Libby sends...

Félicitations

Bonjour Don,

Bien amicalement,

Paule

Hello, Don,

Reading your and Dana’s biographies, which she’s just sent me, I had the idea of taking another look at your website Bewildering Stories...

I must say I’m overwhelmed with admiration at how big it is!

I just wanted to congratulate you and say you’re doing a terrific job, Don! I think you’ve created a fantastic forum for free thought, and a place for communication and incredible diversity!

The fact that the BBC asked you for an interview also says a lot about the quality of the writing and its reception.

I hope that Bewildering Stories will become even more an indispensable reference for Net users excited about good literature in the broad sense of the term as well as for those who consider analysis and thought as bulwarks of individual freedom.

Bravo, keep up the good work, and best wishes for a very long life to Bewildering Stories!

My only regret is that we miss you at Entramis. I understand, in view of the the work the website requires, but we still miss you.

Your friend,

Paule

Of course I’ve sent Paule a nice thank-you note. And I very much miss her discussion list, Entramis, too. I promise to return as soon as I can, probably in January, when I won’t have an on-line course to manage in addition to Bewildering Stories.

I’ll make sure to tell everyone at Entramis that Bewildering Stories is the work of a number of people, especially the indispensable Jerry Wright and our valiant Review Editors. And maybe Paule can send some more European contributors our way...

The BBC interview that Paule refers to came as a suggestion in a strange e-mail asking how Cyrano de Bergerac might serve as an example of early political dissent for our time, when opposition seems strangely lacking in Europe and elsewhere.

My response probably told the sender both more and less than he wanted to hear. Cyrano was a cultural dissident, an Enlightenment figure born a century early. And my notes to The Other World sometimes ask what writer of today is a century or three in advance of our time.

However, I don’t think Cyrano’s times can be compared to ours. The note to episode 4, “What is a Burglar in Infinity?” emphasizes that science-religion controversies have long since been settled; those we see today are political rear-guard actions. By implication, the progress we need now is in the areas of religion and politics, both of which deserve the grander vision that philosophy can provide.

And that is what Cyrano was doing, 350 years ago. Oh well, so much for that BBC interview. I never heard back.

Don
