Blames Lay Forever

by Brenda Mox

Washed up on the riptide of overconfidence,
his independence frozen in the once-great people moment,
such was the price
of his snow-white conscience.

Surviving on outrage,
demanding justice,
drenched in his own culpability,
he read with a hunger for a life unlived.

Between the pages lay plains of despair
in a mind crowded
with a forest of facts,
lodged deep in a heart of darkness.

Lacking joy, null and void,
he heaved the great sigh
of the put-upon male
whose blames lay forever
on somebody else.
