Bewildering Stories introduces and welcomes...
Paul O’Neill
Paul lives in Fife, Scotland. He is a professional expert in Internal Communications and works diligently to make corporate departments intelligible to one another. He has published short fiction widely. A novella is forthcoming, and two collections of short stories have already appeared.
“The Spider-Worm Witch” is a fantasy story that one will not want to read before dinner. Or afterwards, for that matter. A fast is recommended, because readers will encounter the character of a giant hairy spider dripping with worms.
Of course we know that it’s an allegorical image of a human character’s hatred and rage and lust for revenge, but its “bug-eyed monster” quality is quite effective enough to make readers check nervously any dark corners in their vicinity. And, at the end of the story, when the spider generously offers to help the character who has already grislily murdered two others, readers will surely wonder what form that help might take.
