Bewildering Stories introduces and welcomes...
James Rogers
James is originally from Ireland but now lives in New York, where he teaches math at the United Nations International School. He has published short fiction extensively, and a novel is due to be published in November.
“In Her Brother’s Arms” will surely keep readers fixed on the page with the author from beginning to end. The story of three children suffering from severe child abuse by both their father and mother is all the more gripping for being recounted vividly and yet in a manner that is far from exploitative.
Readers may wonder, at first, whether it’s necessary to use fantasy in the form of the deceased elder brother as an invisible revenant. However, consideration of alternative plots will show that the ghost has the advantage of a very useful simplicity; it’s there when it’s needed, not merely for fantasy’s sake. The story is an example of restraint’s successfully communicating the horrific.
