Dorothy Rice
Bewildering Stories biography
A San Francisco native and survivor of the sixties, I now live in Sacramento, California, with my husband, two Chiweenie sisters and two guinea pig brothers. Our five kids are all well-grown and flown.
I write in multiple genres, including narrative nonfiction, memoir, fiction (including fantasy and speculative), and flash. After retiring from a 35-year career in environmental protection (toxic and solid waste, water quality), I earned an MFA in creative writing (at 60) from the University of California Riverside's low-residency program.
I’ve published two books with small presses: Gray Is the New Black: A Memoir of Self-Acceptance (Otis Books, June 2019) and The Reluctant Artist (Shanti Arts, 2015), an art book/memoir about my father, an abstract artist and my inspiration.
I’ve also published stories and essays in literary journals. I now work part-time for a literary non-profit, 916 Ink, which fosters and publishes youth writers (grades 3-12), and also co-direct a literary performance series, Stories on Stage Sacramento.
