Steven Francis Murphy is an aspiring science fiction writer who made his first sale to Interzone Science Fiction Magazine in the United Kingdom on January 17th, 2007. His short story, “Tearing Down Tuesday,” will appear in Issue 210 in May 2007.
He is a veteran of the U.S. Army’s 1st Infantry Division (The Big Red One, see the movie with Lee Marvin and Mark Hamil), which deployed to Operation Desert Storm in 1991. Having survived The Mother of All Battles without a scratch (and thankfully, no Purple Heart) he used his Army College Fund to earn a Bachelors and Masters in European History.
Which explains why he is working as a very reluctant security guard. A day job that does provide him ample time to work on his writing efforts.
Steven makes his home in North Kansas City, Missouri, where he indulges his neurosis about weight management at the local community center. When he is not at the gym working out, he can be found reading, writing, or attempting to master photography and fencing, though not at the same time.
He might also be blogging at Murphy Ponders... or engaged in a serious/or not debate at the Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine Reader’s Forum.
He can usually be found wandering Kansas City with a Starbucks Venti Iced Tea or similar container carrying black, unsweetened, iced tea with very little ice. However, these days you are more likely to find him at Latteland in Briarcliff Village, drinking their iced tea and plotting his escape from the frosty hills and valleys of Missouri.
More often than not, he is followed by an imaginary Muse which Steven describes as, “Very mean. She is tall and carries a whip.” And sometimes he is followed around by real women who do the same job when the Muse is busy with Kate Bacchus.
“Hamilton’s Own,” the greeting expressed by enlisted soldiers of the U.S. Army’s 5th Field Artillery to officers as they salute.
“Faithful and True,” the response of 5th Field Artillery Officers to the greeting and salute of their soldiers.
“Stealth and Cunning,” the greeting expressed by enlisted soldiers of the United States Army’s elite First Sharpshooter Regiment circa 2030.
“Always true,” the response of First Sharpshooter Regiment Officers to the greeting and salute of their soldiers circa 2030.
