Takane Kiuchi
Bewildering Stories biography
Takane Kiuchi (1896-1951) was a Japanese writer and editor. Born in Onomichi, Hiroshima, he lived in Kobe and Otaru before settling in his father’s hometown, Saku, Nagano, at the age of ten. After graduating from Waseda University with a bachelor’s degree in English literature, he joined the editorial staff at Akai tori (Red Bird), a children’s magazine established by Miekichi Suzuki in 1918. He contributed numerous short stories to Akai tori.
He is also credited with discovering Kenji Miyazawa and encouraging his talent. In 1929, he joined Chuo Koron where he oversaw the publication of books by authors such as Masako Toyoda, Yasunari Kawabata, Mantaro Kubota, Ichitaro Kokubun, Joji Tsubota, and Mimei Ogawa.
After the Second World War, he wrote various children’s books while working for the Nihon Shinbun Kyokai (Japan Newspaper Publishers and Editors Association).
